env-audit

The Marlin Project, located in western Guatemala, is a gold/silver mining and processing project. It involves simultaneous mining of the ore by underground and open pit methods, amounting to 5000 tonnes a day. The crushed and ground ore is processed by an agitated leach in a weak cyanide solution and the tailings after detoxification are disposed in a tailings storage facility. Motana's parent company, Glamis Gold Ltd, has a well-defined environemntal management policy and is committed to comply with the relevant laws and regulations of the country. The company is also committed to conduct every year environment audit by an independent third party, qualified for the job. The 2005 audit was done by Dory & Asssociates of Colorado, and reviewed by Patricia Acker Consulting LLC, Colorado.

The 'Adut Report' in the current issue of WISTA : Environment Audit briefly describes the salient features of the above environmental audit and review, and the action plan and procedures that could be implemented to augment the environment management practices at the Marlin Project .

Any initiative to conserve energy in a faiclity needs to first take into account the lighting system operating in the setup since lighting submits itself to changes that are easy to incorporate and inexpensive with a short payback period. It will, however, require basic information on the number of lighting points, their location, and use-time in order to assess savings potential and current spending.

The 'Audit Guide' describes the possible opportunities for increasing lighting energy and suggestions on how to best take advantage of the available opportunities.

'In Focus' deals with biodiversity and ecosystems vis-a-vis the Biological Diversity Act 2002 of India and the efforts that the country is initiating to realise the objectives, stipulated in the United Nations Convetion on Biological Diversity of 1992.
