Environment Accounting : Part 13 - 32
environmet accounting

From the time environmental accounting (EA) was first introduced in 1970 in Norway, it has increasingly been recongnized as a beneficial economic tool and as a motivational factor for sustainable development. In the last decade, the concept of EA has received much attention of policy makers as EA provides policy makers the indicators and descriptive statistics to monitor interaction between the environment and the economy, and for strategic planning and policy analysis to better achieve sustainable and viable development.

The 'Special Feature' in the present issue of the WISTA: Environment Accounting deals with EA and its application in policy making in the developed and developing countries. The World Bank has been regularly commissioning reviews under its Environmental Economics Series that provide a compendium of countries implementing environmental accounting, coverage extent, and the methods employed in computing EA. This feature is based on such a review report of the World Bank.

The 'Perspective' explores the role of Southern European academics with respect to their contribution to social and environmental accounting (SEA) and determines how much their research has percolated and influenced the international discourses on SEA. Based as it is on a descriptive paper by Mannual Castelo Branco and Catarina Delgado of University of Porto in Protugal, covering research on social environment accounting, the Perspective describes the possibility of further globalization of SEA research, and extending its reach to other geographic regions.

'In Focus' describes the development of Oilzapper and Oilivorous-S by TERI in collabration with the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Oilzapper essentially is a bacterial consortium that degrades crude oil and oily sludge and eliminates environmental hazards by cleaning up oil slicks in a bio-friendly and cost-effective manner.

Other features covered include: Case Study; Accounting for Air, Water, Waste; Legal Scene; Energy Scene; Green & Noteworthy; Experts Converge; and Knowledge Spreads.
