Diabetes : Part 15 - 2

intellectual propertyIt is well known that only when we measure a parameter we come to know more about them. Diabetic care is centered around measuring the sugar levels in the body and attempting to keep them at near normal levels. The complications of diabetes on a person are known over a long period of time. Even around the middle of the last century the sugar levels in the body were estimated based on tests on urine samples. Looking back one can now well imagine how crude would have been the estimate. There was a quantum jump in diabetic care whem blood samples were tested for sugar levels. Incidence of hyper glycemia and more crucially hypo glycemia have brought out the need to go beyond spot checks of blood sugar levels. In the beginning of this century continuous monitoring of glucose levels in the body started to become available at the clinical level and the current state of art still leaves many more peaks to be climbed.

The Special Feature in the current issue of WISTA: Diabetes deals with Continuous Glucose Monitoring and thanks are due to Dr. A. S. Lata of Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research for presenting in simple common man's language the possible benefits a diabetic patient can hope to get at this time.

The feature on ‘Centre of Excellence’ profiles Center for Excellence in Diabetes Education of the Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, Mass; Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology of South Africa; and M V Hospital for Diabetes, Chennai, India. The feature covers their overall goals for promoting improved quality of life for people with diabetes and managing effectively associated health complications.
